TSX, U.S. stocks drop after Fed’s remarks on economy

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 07:13 AM PST

https://www.thestar.com/business/2018/02/27/toronto-stock-index-down-moderately-as-pot-stocks-retreat.html Canada's main stock index dropped moderately while U.S. stocks fell more sharply after the head of the Federal Reserve said he's feeling more optimistic about the economy.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell made his first public comments Tuesday and he reaffirmed to the House Financial Services Committee that the central bank plans to raise interest rates gradually.

The market was spooked last month when potential signs of inflation strengthened, raising speculation that the Fed may speed up its timetable and knocking stock prices down by 10 per cent around the world.

Which stocks will last longer than we live?

    Stock Tax Question

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:49 AM PST

A company I work for offered RSU when I joined. After a year, 25% of the RSU will be vested in my name (that's the deal).

My question is when will I be taxed? Will I be taxed when I sell it (at a profit)? Does the state matter (because Washington has 0% State while California is high).

Also, does my age matter as to when I sell it?

    Please guide. Thank you.

    $NFLX V. $DIS

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 07:04 AM PST

$NFLX V. $DIS is a common comparison. Looking deeper into these companies it's hard to justify $NFLX valuation of 126B compared to $DIS valuation of 157B.

I understand $NFLX has growth potential but so does $DIS, along with a greater array of assets. $DIS has better content, a streaming service, the top sports broadcasting network, a news network, a top movie studio and all of the Disney parks. With the high profile fox buy, $DIS acquired a majority holding in Hulu. Netflix has over 3 times more active users compared to Hulu, meaning there is more room for Hulu to grow than Netflix. $DIS now has the ability to optimize Hulu and stream their original content on the streaming platform, which should lead to greater future growth.

With all of this said $DIS stock has remained stagnant or decreased, while $NFLX has increased greatly.

Can someone explain this to me or justify $NFLX valuation?

Is there a website that shows which companies plan on doing share buy backs?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 01:52 PM PST

    Hey guys!

I read or watched a video somewhere that said that public companies have to disclose in advance that they plan on doing a share buy back for any given quarterly period.
Example: Trump's tax plan free's up 10% of ABC's cash. ABC wants to buy back 10% of it's outstanding shares. How can I see which companies intend on doing buy backs and when they might happen.

I hope this post helps anyone also interested in the subject.

Thank you so much and have a fantastic day

Anyone else disappointed with TD platform?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:44 AM PST

I was previously on Scottrade, but as of this weekend was transferred to TD due to the acquisition. I'm obviously still very new to the TD UI, but I'm finding it to be very cluttered and clunky to navigate. Does anyone have any recommendations for tools TD offers or ways to get more comfortable with how to navigate?

Why isn’t there a decent OTC method to invest in Samsung Outside of South Korean exchanges?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 11:42 AM PST

I'm an American, and have wanted to have some Samsung exposure for some time. Every time I think (and try) to get some I'm reminded that my only option for pure Samsung exposure is with a thinly traded pink sheet called $SSNLF which my Interactive Brokers account can't even access.

I've done a fair amount of googling and it seems clear that my options are what they are, so I'm not asking for another way to do it. My only question is WHY? I would imagine there is and has been a lot of demand for shares of Samsung by offshore investors and that there is money to be made by offering it to them. What's getting in between the demand and the supply?

Why do companies wait until after hours to release earnings reports and important news?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 01:04 PM PST

I was curious about this earlier this morning when checking out AMD IR Events, and I noticed that all of them take place outside of market hours.

Is there a reason for this? Why do companies intentionally plan announcements outside of market hours? Is it to prevent stockholders from making impulse sales when the company releases news?

With AMD specifically, they released a bad earnings report in May of 2017, and the stock dropped almost 30% in a single day, but it eventually rebounded. With a situation like that, it seemed like a ton of shareholders started panic selling the day immediately following the earnings reports instead of during. In a situation like that, how would an after-hours release prevent panic selling?

Any alternatives to TD Ameritrade with quick ACH deposits and similar trade fees?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:53 AM PST

I was with Scott Trade before TDA took over and was able to ACH deposit to my account almost instantly, a few minutes at the most. TDA apparently prefers that you wire them money for instant access and has their ACH deposits listed as taking 1-3 business days.

So I bought some home depot stock at 187 murda murda per share the day before they released their financial. Anticipating a good quarter and a quick buck. Well the quarter was good but the stock has only gone down. Currently at 182.2.

I've since found many many better investment opportunities. Would you sell at a loss? Should I wait to see if it goes back up? All my money is tied up here. Which isn't much btw.

Have had it for ~4 months. Admittedly buying in after earnings wasn't a great idea but it's been a wild ride of ups and downs. Thinking of waiting for a small upturn (it's volatile enough to do that) then selling and putting it into something with reasonable growth. Say, V, for example. Thoughts?
