Don’t understand why SNAP is soaring right now

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 08:23 AM PST

While it is true that Evan Spiegel grew daily active users and beat revenue estimates, they're still not making profits.

Yesterday, "Snapchat Update" was trending for a little while on twitter and the consensus was that people hate it. It seems like every new update they come out with has a different direction and I don't even think they know where they're headed as a company. First the failure of spectacles, restaurant finder and reviews, and now this discover page...

Any thoughts on SNAP as a company? For me, I think they're one of the most unprepared public company trading on the NYSE. Simply a service I'll continue to use (probably) but never invest in.

Whenever there is a large dip across the board I like to clean house and sell off all of my dogs and replace them with more attractive picks.

I dumped AUY, BUD, XOM, TNH and GE and loaded up on BRKB, MSFT and V.

    What about you?

New/Young Investor (23) looking for input on selected ETFs.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 07:31 AM PST

    Hello,

I'm a new/young investor (23) looking to invest about $5,000. I was looking to split up $3,000 - $4,000 between 6 ETFs: VTI VEU VBR EFG VWO VNQ And then invest the remaining $2,000 - $1,000 in individual stocks.

How do my ETF choices look? I'd appreciate any feedback.

EDIT: I'm looking to hold on for 5-10 years.

    TTWO Earnings Play

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 12:36 PM PST

Anyone else betting on TTWO earnings with me? The pre correction price rally TTWO had really gives me a good feeling on this one. GTAV is a beast of a game that seems to not have any competition. The company seems to have its head on straight postponing RDR2 to make sure it is perfected and looking at past earnings they haven't missed before.

Of course with all of that said its still a gamble.

    Thoughts?

Can someone explain VIX to me?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 06:56 AM PST

I see that it is a volatility index but what i don't understand is why the price movement seems to inverse the market. Shouldn't the price go up/down depending on the speed the market is moving at instead of the direction it is taking?

Looking to invest in new ETF - need some thoughts

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 04:59 AM PST

So with the green day yesterday, it seems like a good time to buy into some new stocks. I recently bought some Canopy stocks, unfortunately though at a relatively high (29.38 for TWMJF) so I'm at a loss so far but I'm into this for the long game and not really worried. Anyway, I narrowed my options so far to these but feel free to suggest anything else that's on your mind and you think is a good buy. SCHX - focused on companies in DOW, basically like a cheaper version of QQQ with nice yield and low expense ratio. GAMR - focused on video game companies. Seems like it's not active though and many filler companies that hold it back from sky rocketing, but it did go up like 50% the last year. MJX/HMLSF (not certain which one) - Canadian weed stocks. As I said I'm already invested in 1 stock so this isn't good for diversification, but I still think it's a good bet for the future. LIT - seems to focus on lithium batteries and automated cars, that's definitely for the long run.

    Ideas on Bioamber stock

BIOA has taken a heavy dip recently, but people seem to have some hope in it coming back up. I did a little bit of research on the company myself, but I am unsure of if buying is a good idea. Thoughts on this particular stock?

    AMZN Bubble

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 09:41 AM PST

Am I the only one who thinks that AMZN stock is in a bubble. They are trading at 233 times earnings. I don't think e-commerce or logistics will ever be that profitable. Sure vertical integration may help but I don't see them lowering costs much more then UPS or Fedex. Plus the barrier to entry for E-Commerce is too low for AMZN to have big margins. AWS is valuable yes, but it's not hundreds of billions of dollars valuable.

And as far as things like drone deliveries, that's a pie in the sky idea, I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Buy and hold investor approaching retirement age

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 01:58 PM PST

I have had 30+ years of buy and hold investing. I did pretty good I guess. I would have done better if I could have put in more at a younger age, but overall, the system worked like I expected it to. SO and I have several kinds of IRA, with lots of great stocks I picked years ago, including EL that I had since the IPO, and LVS that I bought under 2.

I cashed out the last of it on Friday. I have been selling things for a while and it is all cashed out now.

In my opinion, buy and hold is a good strategy, but it is not a permanent condition. It has a beginning and an end. You don't hold your stocks until you die. You hold them until it is the right time to sell them. Then you get out of the market and spend the money.

The right time to sell, for me at least, is when a bull market appears to have topped out and you are approaching retirement age.

I'm taking my winnings and buying a nice house in the country. From here on, I will be watching the market from the sidelines. Maybe I will buy in again later, maybe under a different administration. When I do, it won't be a buy and hold strategy, just short-term trades.

I just want you to know how good it feels, to be watching this volatility from the sidelines and knowing it doesn't affect me at all. It feels great to be out.

They are about to announce earnings. I picked up a decent position in them on Monday midway through that large 4% drop in the DOW. I expect an earnings beat.

Their direct competitors EA had a big boost in stock price after their earnings and their other competitors ATVI announce earnings tomorrow. I am hopeful we have a little runup back to the $127-$130 range that was going on just before the DOW started to correct last Friday.

    WebBroker - Advanced Dashboard (TD)

I already trade through TD Waterhouse so it makes sense to have everything under one umbrella, but before purchasing I am wondering if the Advanced Dashboard is worth it? An opinion as to why it is or isn't worth it would be much appreciated as well as some of the features (i.e live charts / indicators, etc.) thanks!

    NFLX's potential longterm?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2018 12:23 PM PST

I haven't seen netflix mentioned on here too often despite it being a fairly popular stock, so I was curious what people thought of it. The bits and pieces I've heard seem to feel that Netflix is overvalued, but I want to know why people think that way. I've had a share of netflix since the summer and recently bought another one before the dip (rip) at 269, but it seems to have already bounced back. Do you all think Netflix still has a lot of room for growth, or is that already accounted for? Netflix seems to be getting a stronger grounding on the legal anime streaming community. Thoughts on that and how well they'll monetize it? How do you think the subscribers would respond to another price increase in a year or so (or is that too far out there to predict)?
To give some context, I'm still learning the ropes (just practicing right now). I'm started investing at the end of this past summer with $1000 and I'm currently up 12-15%. Currently spread across NFLX (2), AET, CSCO, V, and WM (2). Previously had 2 TSLA but sold them off before the dip in favor of and additional NFLX and everything else I have on the list.
