New year, new portfolio. High dividends!

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 12:01 PM PST

Right. So as the title suggests, I'm going to start a new portfolio with the goal being to make as much from dividends as I can. I have a few companies in mind with growing dividends and higher yields. I was curious to see what Reddit might think on some of my picks, whether this is going to be a good year for the company or not; or if you have another suggestion.

Also, as a rule, I was wondering how much of each company to have in relation to all of my holdings. What do others do? I was stuck between five and ten percent. Depending on the uncertainty of the company's future.

Complete and utter newb who is very confused

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 04:31 PM PST

Hello Hello, To start with, I'm from Australia (anything involving dollars assume is in AU$) Now I'm 18 and seeing as everyone who I've talked to, and the books I've read all say, investments and stock trading is a long time thing, I thought why the hell not start while I'm young.

I don't expect to be a millionaire, I don't expect to turn over hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, and I'm honestly just wanting to earn a little something to have when imp much, much older.

Now I do plan on endeavouring into day trading but I've been led to believe I should hold off on that endeavour until I'm more financially sound. I was also directed to index funds (Vanguard? & S&P500?)

    My questions are

    • what's a good starting amount before investment? I currently have $1000 stored away and I work part-time, so I can save more and wait longer if needs be.

    • Is it necessary to go to a stoke broker? Or can I do everything myself? (I like being independent)

And finally and perhaps the most stupid question but the one I struggle with the most.

    • Where do I go to invest in these Index funds/stocks? As well as manage/ create a portfolio with everything in it?

If I'm posting in the wrong subreddit can I please be directed to the correct place?

Thanks a bunch for any advice/ information to help a total newb

What are thoughts on HMLSF Marijuana ETF?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 05:43 PM PST

What are you thoughts on HMLSF Marijuana ETF? It's been spiking recently especially with some of the California Law changes. Wondering if it's worth spending the $50 in commission at Fidelity to pick up some.

    Why no investigation into CXR?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 04:17 PM PST

I bought CXR before it turned into a garbage fire due to their August 2016 QR.

In hindsight it is obvious the CEO and board members were lying to investors right up until the QR, using terms like "firing on all cylinders" literally the week before.

If you're still holding today (like me, don't ask why) then you would be down over 95% of your initial investment. Never in my worst nightmares did I think I could buy a stock and within months it would be worth 1/10th of what I paid.

How are they not being investigated for outright lying to and misleading their investors? I'm Canadian and as far as I know the OSC didn't even bat an eye.

Anyone know if there is any recourse for me? I was 28 at the time and it basically destroyed a good portion of my savings.

FiatChrysler (FCAU) - what's going on?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 03:34 PM PST

I bought 120 shares in June @ $10.72 and it's up nearly 80% since. It's only picking up steam: +4.12% today and has demolished the S&P over the past month. With auto sales down across the board lately, what's going on over at Chrysler to justify this kind of movement?

Know The Reason Why Stock Market Will Not Crash

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 07:13 PM PST

In this post, you will get to know why the stock market will never crash. The Global stock markets are close to record highs, valuations look stretched and investors are nervous. There area unit several investors. Who area unit actually distressed regarding it. Many of them suppose stocks are overvalued, consistent with a world survey. However, investors inclined to bail out. Now face a thorny perplexity as a result of the amount forthwith before a crash is once the simplest returns tend to be created.

Before the past 10 major crashes, the average return in the preceding 12 months was 27pc. While in the preceding two years the average return was 39pc. According to JP Morgan Asset Management.

Here is one of the strongest reasons why the markets are not about to crash. The global economic recovery is not over yet. The economic recovery following the 2008 financial crisis appears to remain on track. America, whose stock market sets the tone globally, is furthest ahead in the recovery cycle. It was found that the unemployment is still falling, though more slowly, and consumer confidence is still growing. Various experienced fund managers expect that as long because the America economy continues to be supported by growing employment. The post-financial crisis healing process is still going on.

Some also say that the consumer confidence is at a 17‑year high. You can always point to risks but as long as that healing process is continuing, people are optimistic about markets. An economic index that has proved a particularly good predictor of previous American downturns also remains positive.

When is the Right Time to Invest in the Stock Market?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 07:09 PM PST

When the investors invest in the stock market for the first time. They often worry about the timing of their initial stock purchases. This is because when you start trading or investing in the market at the wrong point. Then the market's ups and downs can take you to suffer big losses. Whenever you first invest, time is on your side. You will notice that over the long haul, the compounding returns of a well-chosen investment will add up nicely. No matter what the market happens to be doing when you buy your first shares.

It is suggested to all the novice traders. That rather than fretting about when you should make that first stock purchase. You must think about how long you are planning to keep money in the market. Various investments offer varying degrees of risk and return. And each is best suited for a different investing time frame. Generally, you will notice that the bonds offer smaller, more dependable returns for investors with shorter time frames. Longer-term government bonds provide slightly higher returns. Stocks have also been very good to investors. All the large-cap stocks have returned an average of 10.4% per year from 1926 to 2003 which is quite a bit higher than bonds.

Interestingly, the range of the returns for stocks is not that much larger than the range of bonds over the same period. Since you have more time to wait out periods of bad returns, the greater risk you can accept.

In case, you want the money within the next five years, you need to avoid individual stocks and stock-centric mutual funds. In case, you want your money in the next three years, then you can avoid investing in a bond, mutual funds and real estate as it can drop if interest rates increase.

Stock market simulator NOT paper trading

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 04:14 AM PST

I'm trying to learn how the market behaves under certain situations.

I was wondering if their was simulator where I could put different variables in and see how the market/certain stocks react?

For example, 'if major stock holder of company xyz sold all of their shares, then shorted some shares in a competing company, whilst somebody else put up a sell wall agains company xyz, and also the whole industry is in a bubble. What would happen?'

What do you guys think of Alibaba now?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 09:42 AM PST

I'm hesitant to invest in any company now since I believe we will hit a bear market this year or the next. However since this company is concerned with Chinese consumers and market economy and not the U.S, will this still be a good buy for growth? Or will the bear market affect ALL markets globally? $OSI - great industry, nice dip - thoughts?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 09:21 AM PST

OSI Systems - an American company based in California that develops and markets security and inspection systems such as airport security X-ray machines and metal detectors, medical monitoring and anesthesia systems, and optoelectronic devices. As of June 2010, the company employs approximately 3,180 personnel globally and includes subsidiary companies Spacelabs Healthcare, Rapiscan Systems and OSI Optoelectronics.

A friend recommend this stock to me, I like how the graph looks, there's a nice dip from December that brought the stock down $15 because the company was accused of fraudulent and corrupt activity by the short selling hedge fund, Muddy Waters.

What are your thoughts? The graph is stable now, might crank up soon given that everything else under the sun has popped off in the new year.

Right now we're in process of adding the portfolio aggregation functionality and therefore, to prioritize the broker dealers, can you share in the comments what brokerage company you use for making the trades and/or for your IRA, 401(k)?
