Using “We” or “I” voice when on social media?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 12:03 AM PST

I run a small handmade shop and have gotten into the habit of using "We" on my businessss social media accounts because it just sounds more professional and who knows if I will add more people on to help me in the future. I am starting to feel like it's a little impersonal, especially as I find myself wanting to talk more about my personal creative process.

What do you do? Should I stick to the habit of "We"? Sometimes it feels a little odd, since everyone knows it's a single artist behind the brand -and I'm also trying to be personable and get more into storytelling and sharing personal anecdotes of what drives the art.

Creative business start up - Any advice?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 03:24 AM PST

At the end of January my job in retail is coming to an end, my contract is unlikely to be renewed and iv been miserable working in retail for a few years now. I want to take this opportunity to follow my dreams and start selling my creative wares.

I am a trained illustrator with a background in textiles, I'm in a good place financially and I want to make this my full time job, creating products and selling them. I'm thinking to sell through Etsy to start off and have put a lot planning in so far but I'm looking for any advice to put towards my plans.

Has anyone got any good resources or words of wisdom to help out?

Opened an in-home daycare in November. I'm the only staff. Do I need a bookkeeper or CPA? (Seattle)

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 01:44 PM PST

I recently started a small in-home daycare and manage all of my bookkeeping through Quickbooks Self-employed. The business is pretty straightforward. Parents pay tuition at the end of the month, it goes into a checking account. I'm the only employee, currently. I track my expenses on QB, upload all my invoices, receipts, etc.. It seems pretty simple, but am I missing something critical? Should I be utilizing a bookkeeper or CPA to do my taxes?

According to QB, since I haven't brought in enough profit, yet, I don't need to pay my quarterly taxes. Do I need to go through another channel to pay city taxes? (my husband brought this up)

Come tax season, can I just use the information on my QB account to do my taxes or should I hire a CPA?

    Thank you for your help.

Automated Tax Payment Software - Federal

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 04:34 PM PST

I use Square for payment processing and Wave for accounting/analysis. I noticed one available plugin app for Square (I believe) called Davo Sales Tax that automated taxes and their payment. It estimated your taxes based on sales and then took some money out of the associated bank account and stored it for paying a monthly or quarterly tax bill. Unfortunately, it did this only for state.

Is there a federal income tax solution? I always struggle with paying my taxes, and would like to automate as much as I could, to take it out of my hands and make sure it gets done.

Simple Lead Management Software for Clients - Options?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 06:14 AM PST

Hi guys, thanks in advance for any ideas you can offer.

I have a client in a construction industry niche. What he lacks in lead frequency, he makes up for in lead quality. That's because his niche is self-filtering; most of the people who reach his site have already decided that they're interested in pursuing a service like the one he offers, and there aren't many regional competitors who offer his specific services/value.

Unfortunately he's an older gentleman and is aging out of day to day company management. Because he now has employees handling his leads that he used to nurse along himself, he's relying on their individual words + individual documentation practices to keep track of everything. As you can imagine, in many cases these employees are not doing their due diligence. This results in leads going cold and less revenue for his business.

His old paper system doesn't work with everyone's new workflow, and his attempts at keeping track of each lead (and each employee) via email, text, and phone is no longer adequate. He has asked me to investigate the best lead management options are for him. CRM is an area where I have minimal experience, so I thought I'd turn to /r/smallbusiness for help.

Here's some more technical information about his current setup:

    • In order of frequency, leads arrive via: onsite contact form submissions, phone calls, emails sent to the public-facing company email address, and social media.
    • Contact form submissions are handled via Gravity Forms.
    • Phone calls are handled via RingCentral.
    • Email services are handled via G Suite.

Here's what he's looking for out of a CRM platform.

    • Simple lead entry with fields for contact information (e.g., phone numbers, email addresses, addresses)
    • If possible, integrated lead entry with Gravity Forms. It would be great, for example, if a contact form submission automatically generated a new lead entry in the CRM system. Alternately, if a lead entry already exists (e.g., same email address used for the contact form submission), then the lead would be updated to note the latest action.
    • Similarly, integrated lead entry with Ring Central would be great. He'd like to be able to see the last action taken on a lead whenever a phone number matching a lead is used. So let's say that a lead has been calling the company number but not receiving a response - he'd like to see that. If a successful call/conversation takes place, it would be amazing to somehow note that as well.
    • The ability to review all leads at a glance is important. Along with that, the ability to enter different users (employees) into the system so as to track each user's activity is also important. Getting these employees to use the system won't be a challenge once the right system is selected, but it's also important for my client to not spend a great deal of time training them. Most if not all of the employees handling leads also serve additional functions in the company - usually via hands on construction. So the less retraining necessary, the better.
    • Over-complication isn't necessary. The overall goal is to keep track of each active lead and to be able to see the last action taken on a lead at a glance. Nothing more, nothing less.

I've taken a look at some of the options out there, but many seem overly complex and/or prohibitively expensive for his particular needs. We're looking for something that's a few steps above basic spreadsheet management, but we don't need a system with hundreds of bells and whistles.

Anyone have any suggestions on a platform that might be a good fit?

TL;DR: Older client can no longer handle his construction company leads on a day to day basis. Employees have taken over that aspect of the company, but their standards are lower than his, and he needs a way to keep track of leads and the last actions taken on leads. Actions might be returned calls, returned emails, and so on. This should be easy to view at a glance, and it should be capable of allowing multiple employees to sign into the system to update their leads. Over-complication and big expenses are to be avoided, because ultimately we're talking about maybe 50 solid leads a year. The important thing is that he can track the status of each lead. Integrations with Gravity Forms and RingCentral would be ideal.

    How to sell Leads

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 12:47 PM PST

Hi. Have a small business that generates about 200-300 new clients a month. These are all clients that are relocating. They are all moving to a new state and need all kinds of information about businesses in the area that they are moving. Anything from insurance, Cable service, alarm all the way down to the local pizza place or dentist or pool cleaning service. I would love to be able to sell this information. Any advice on where to start. Thanks. Happy new year

Personal loan or small business loan to get up and running?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 08:01 AM PST

Hello! I have what I confidently believe to be a great small business idea for my area, but I'm stuck right now with regard to startup funding. I visited the local women's business development center of the SBA and received some guidance on writing a business plan which is necessary to apply for a small business loan. However, a significant part of a business plan is the feasibility and marketing research and I'm having a lot of trouble gathering actual data. My idea is for a pet services business so I've contacted several local veterinary offices but have not been successful in getting even general, approximate information from them about their clientele. I know in my gut that my business would be successful in my area, but I can't get any hard data to support that one way or the other.

So I've done a bit of online research about personal loans versus small business loans to get startup funding, and it seems like a personal loan might be advisable. The reason for this is that I do not have any business credit and cannot provide historical data about the success of my business and from what I've read, it can be very difficult to get approved for a small business loan without these things.

My liaison at the WBDC really wants me to complete this business plan and apply for an SBA loan.

TL;DR: Is a personal loan a better route for startup financing if I lack a history of business ownership or hard data to support the feasibility study?

    Question about CA contractor lisense

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 10:08 AM PST

Sometime next year I'm going to start a pool service business in CA. I need a D-35 contractor license. After doing some research I noted you need 4 years of experience to get the license. I only have one year of experience in the pool industry, but have many in construction. Can I use my other experience to have the necessary requirements?

    Thanks.

    Lead Generation - Telecoms UK

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 09:59 AM PST

    Hello Redditors!

I'm looking for some advice from some experienced members. I own a B2B telecoms company within the UK. We've been trading for a little over a year in which we've been turned a profit within our first year. The business has grown to 5 staff members.

Our primary source of lead generation has been through direct postal mailers. These campaigns have grown with our business success and we're spending up to £10k within a single campaign. We generally get around a 1% inbound call response rate from these campaigns over a yearly quarter which provides a positive ROI on our marketing efforts.

The telecoms market in the UK is a very saturated market with a lot of competition within it. The older established businesses primarily focus on telemarketing for their lead generation. Cold telemarketing has been flogged heavily throughout the years and is a very difficult means for appointment setting.

While I appreciate telemarketing still holds a key place within any vertical market for lead generation, I would be keen to understand which other B2B lead generation means you feel may be fruitful or have proved successful within your own business?

Owners, what service do you wish someone provided?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 09:11 AM PST

What do you dream of being included in service packages?

I'm a freelance writer and I'm really trying to get a feel for what my clients need. I know a lot of people just say "give me a topic," then write about it and call it a day.

(This q doesn't just pertain to writing services. I know I'd love the graphic designers I work with to offer ideas more unique than "you're a writer, we've gotta put image of a pen somewhere")

How do you compete in a market where fraud is rampant?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 10:43 AM PST

Kind of a ranty idea -- but in the US isn't the 2008 housing crisis evidence that millions of people are actively engaged in some form of fraud?

Likewise, these days in business it seems like fraudsters win. Bitcoin is a fraud.

You could replace the word, "fraud" with speculation and it might sound more agreeable to discuss.

When you have a system where nobody even values actual currency or economics, how on earth do you make any gains at all? Is there some kind of economic school of thought of this? Quasi-socialism? Do people start going to jail? Does crime increase? Do you twiddle your thumbs waiting for enforced martial law and social collapse?

    What's the deal?
