Posted: 31 Dec 2017 09:34 AM PST Graduated in May. Private Loans - PAID Perkins Loan - PAID Federal Loans - $26,000 left to go. My minimum payment is $290 but I make $1,000 payments...I'd make a bigger payment but I totaled my beater car so now my insurance and car payment is like a damn rent payment itself (living the dream, living with my parents for now) [link] [comments] |
Student loan, and pell grant refunds. Posted: 01 Jan 2018 01:49 AM PST Hello everyone! I desperately need advice for a question I have. I currently go to a community college, in which I attend for free. The pell grant and a scholarship or two covers my tuition completely and the school sends me a refund check every semester. Anyways, I want to take out a student loan for a car.. It's honestly an educational expense, I have no other way of getting to the school whatsoever. (The school is in a different county, No public transportation will get me there and biking won't help.) Anyways, Like I said, the amount of assistance I get from the pell grant and other scholarships and grants cover my tuition and other costs completely. However, the remaining amount that is going to be sent to me will not be sufficient enough for me to buy a car... So I want to take out a subsidized direct loan for around 2 grand and use the pell grant refund for more money onto that... My question is... Will the U.S Department of education take my pell grant refund and use it to cover the loan I'm taking out? Let's say i'm getting about $600 back for the pell grant refund, will that go towards paying off the loan and not be sent to me?? Also another question, I'm taking out this student loan for the spring semester. However, my college made it known that they split the disbursements between the fall and spring semesters? Will I get the full amount of the loan now or will I have to wait for the second disbursement of it in September? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 10:23 PM PST I am currently knocking out my pre-reqs for a dental program and I need to get a student loan. After high school I withdrew and dropped a lot of classes because I needed to work more and couldn't balance it all. After a 5 year break from school, I'm back at it. However, since I dropped/withdrew so many classes back then, the school "flagged" my account to not receive any financial aid until I am back in good academic standing. I made an appeal last semester and it got denied. I'm assuming the same thing will happen this upcoming semester. Someone mentioned to look into Sally Mae but I wanted to know if anyone could advise me about what other companies / options I can do until the school unflags me. Thanks for reading! Did the Statute of Limitations really run out? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 05:59 AM PST I stopped paying my private student loans around 2010. I was a newspaper reporter making very little money and kept falling farther and farther behind. This summer, I received a letter saying that the statute of limitations on my private loans had expired BUT that I had made a $65 payment after chargeoff. (The student loan company had improperly applied my federal loan payment to my private loans in January 2017.) My questions: 1. Will a $65 payment on more than a hundred thousands dollars of debt actually restart the clock? 2. When and how will I know? Basically, the payments never went away in my Navient account, though the delinquent payments dropped off my credit report. I'm not worried about getting sued. I am, however, moving to Germany in a month, and I'm concerned that the student loan company might be able to get a judgement against me without me knowing because I don't have a U.S. address where they can serve me. Any advice is much appreciated (I am trying to get a pro bono lawyer's advice but that's a bit of a wait). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 07:28 AM PST Hi everyone. I'm the founder of an organization called LearnFund (https://www.learnfund.org/), which aims to help families afford higher ed via alternatives to PLUS and Private loans that may offer better terms and more flexibility. This is NOT a post to advertise our social venture. Rather, I'd love any feedback on whether our concept resonates. For those of you with private // PLUS loans, how do you feel about them? Are you concerned about taking out too much debt to support your son or daughter? Any feedback on PLUS // private loans or on this initiative would be much appreciated! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Dec 2017 07:21 AM PST Hi, its been quite some time since I've been out of school and I cant remember the route to go. My wife is starting Grad school in a couple of weeks and has already done the fasfa but, still hasn't heard back. Do we apply for student loans for the amount of per semester or total amount for her degree? We are looking at Sofi ( I have my undergrad with refinanced with them and they are amazing). She didn't have any loans with her undergrad and her credit is 800+ Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
$76k In Debt After 4.5 Yrs & Overwhelmed Posted: 31 Dec 2017 01:27 PM PST Hello, I just graduated with my Masters of Accounting Science 2 weeks ago and received my Bachelors in Accounting a year prior. I Just took out whatever loans I needed to pay tuition and never ACTUALLY knew what I owed. Thus, I put together a spreadsheet today and realized my burden from student loans is quite high. Around 76K and only going up with interest. I am fortunate enough to be starting a job on 1/4/18 that pays me well (58,000 starting salary). If I did the math right after Fed/State tax & Medicare + SSC my take home pay should be around $3,500 a month or 43k annually. How much of this amount should I be realistically be putting towards my loans in the first year? What scares me is if I do nothing, my loans will accrue ~ $4,000 per year with interest rates ranging from 3.76% all the way up to 7.21%. [link] [comments] |
Nelnet delaying processing of payment on purpose? Posted: 31 Dec 2017 05:35 AM PST So I have Nelnet for all my student loans. My first payment is due January 2nd so I made sure to submit my payment last week on the 27th (well before the holiday weekend). I know, according to their website, that it takes about 48 hours to process a payment. I had the payment made to go through on the 27th and by the 29th it should have been processed. So today, I checked my account and it still says payment processing! Why is Nelnet doing this? I did put my payment towards a specific group but I don't think this is any reason why my payment would be delayed. Anyone have any advice? [link] [comments] |
Student loans in conjunction with Post 9/11 GI Bill Posted: 31 Dec 2017 08:44 AM PST I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this. My husband transferred his GI Bill to me, but it only covers 80% of my tuition. So I applied for financial aid to cover the rest. My question is, how are these overlapping aids paid out? I got a notification that my loan was applied to my account and it covered the fees. Does this mean that the GI Bill won't pay anything toward my tuition, since my account is now showing $0 balance? We were counting on a refund because I had quit my job to go back to school and we will have to go through all of January without my income. [link] [comments] |
