Posted: 29 Jan 2018 04:13 PM PST I'm training to do toughest mudder in may (similar to tough mudder, but it is a looped course and an 8 hour timed event starting at midnight) so I'm wearing a lot more active wear than I used to. I've been a runner on and off my whole life and done spats at the gym - but never both at the same time. So I now need more active wear than I used to but I just can't bring myself to pay the insane prices that name brands want for running shorts. In Australia, these thing retail for anywhere from $40 up to about $100. For something that is going to constantly be sweated in and stink. In addition to the cost, I also just don't like the look of a lot of them - too short, too long, no pockets, weird cut up the sides. I have one brand named pair which are great, but cost $50 a few years ago. The pair I wear most often cost $13 from Aldi and they were great, but I've owned them for 2 years and they're starting to wear through. Aldi had their gym stock over the weekend and I got a new pair and they're heaps different, way heavier and less comfortable. The cheaper pairs at kmart/target are very low quality, use poor materials and don't fit well. I also buy all my running/workout shirts from kmart for about $10 for the same reason. They're very ugly and comfort is hit and miss, but again - I can't bring myself to spend $60 on a shirt to sweat in. My hobby is also running in a field and rolling in a mud pit - often the shirt and shorts I wear cannot be salvaged after an event! I'm so frustrated with this that I've started looking at how much it would cost me to manufacture my own line and bring them in to Australia to sell on a webstore. I have a very niche FT office job where I specialise in child protection. I'm at a point in my career where I've hit a ceiling where it will be hard for anymore upward mobility - my only option is to jump to another company, but even still, I would be unlikely to have a higher level position. So I've started a consultancy business. At the moment I have limited time to spend on it, I only work on it 1 hour a day during the week and 2 or 3 hours one day on the weekend if needed. I'm not heavily searching for clients just at the moment, I'm creating a brand and a sense of expertise while lazily cold-emailing. So, considering I work FT, already have a small business that I'm not working as hard as I should and have no experience manufacturing, importing or fulfilling orders - just how insane of an idea is this? I've started looking at costs to manufacture the shorts (not shipping, etc) and the Amazon marketplace is by invitation only in Australia at the moment, so it would have to be my own store and including shipping, the max retail price would have to be $15.00 to fit with my idea of selling quality, comfortable and cheap shorts. Obviously I wouldn't just do men's shorts. I'd introduce women's shorts and men's and women's active t-shirts and tank tops over time. I'd do minimal styles - initially 1 style with 2 colours but even with growth, I'd limit my range to 2 or 3 styles and only ever 2 or 3 colours/patterns. Has anyone done this? Do my retail costs make this not viable? Can I fulfill orders in the evening from my garage? Do I even want to sell on Amazon? Shark Tank seems to love it! Do I crowd fund and pre-sell my order or is that a stupid idea for an order which will be less than $5k and I'm just screaming 'I have no confidence in this business'? [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jan 2018 12:30 AM PST Wanting to finance my small business start up, by because I'm fairly young I don't have a lot of money saved and don't have previous work experience out side of some summer jobs I think it may be difficult to secure a loan from a bank. That being said I'm trying to research so called angel investors and had some questions 1. What's the best way to get in touch with local investors (angels or otherwise) that are not part of a bank 2. Are there any risk with going with a non bank investor 3. Can I trust an investor with my business idea? 4. What's to stop them from taking my idea and implementing it or a similar version on their own? Thank you all for your help! [link] [comments]

Unpaid invoices with obvious intent not to pay. Help! Posted: 29 Jan 2018 02:17 PM PST I own a small business based in the US that supplies raw materials to other small businesses. Typically I require payment in full up front before I ship anything out and only give terms (usually net 30) to local clients. There's a small business in a different state that's been buying small amounts of my product for a few years. The owner is an acquaintance/friend of mine (we have some friends in common). I've always given him a net30 because his business is a coffee shop and has off and on cash flow issues. He has always paid invoices before, sometimes late but with prompting he always pays. So last summer, he tells me (over text) that he'd like a standing order of product each month. I send him product in June (with a net 30), then in July he confirms he wants more via text and he also wants to continue a standing order. August rolls around and I still haven't received payment for June, but it's only a week or so overdue and July isn't due yet. So I send out August. September rolls around and I haven't been in paid for June or July (both overdue) so I just don't send September. In October I follow up re: payments over text and he says he knows he's behind and not to send any more for awhile and he will get caught up ASAP. Come December he still hasn't paid and so I call and text him and say for our accounting we really need payment by Year end to make our accounting easier (not totally true but it had been months and I wanted to be paid). He assured me he will pay ASAP and apologizes. In January, we still hadn't been paid so I send him a text asking if he'd rather pay online via credit card or bank transfer and he says yes so I resend him a link to the invoices via QB online with a pay online option. He opens all the invoices and then texts me that something most be wrong because he thinks he's only behind one invoice and not 3 and is very surprised that he owes $1200. I explain that the last check we have from him is from early June and that maybe something was lost in the mail but on our end we've not been paid for three invoices. He says he will have to check that on his end and I don't hear from him again. Since then, he's blocked my cell number (I can tell bc I tested with other phones), isn't responding to emails and when I call his coffee shop, he answers and immediately hangs up. He's very obviously avoiding me. Re: proof, I have all of his POs (texts but still), tracking from USPS showing all packages delivered, proof of electronic delivery of all invoices from QB online and for the June and July deliveries, confirmation of receipt from him via text. If brought to court, I think I'd pretty easily win. But for only $1200, what's the best course of action? We're in different states so I'd have to probably get a lawyer. I guess I could file in small claims next time I'm in town, but the travel back there might be tricky. Is there some way to send him to collections? I'm also concerned that maybe he's burning the bridge with me because he knows that his business is failing and might not care. If they go bankrupt I don't think I'll have any way of getting my money back right? Overall, I know it's only $1200 but my business is very small (Grossing about $150k/year) so that $1200 is a lot towards our bottom line. Advice? [link] [comments]
Surf or Sink: Am I in too deep? Posted: 29 Jan 2018 11:49 PM PST I've been looking around for a cute surf suit for sometime with no luck (simple, stylish, functional). So I'm thinking of starting my own line. I have no experience and have heard how difficult retail is with all the potential for returns. I'm optimistic that three basic sizes (S/M/L) in a few simple styles is safe but it would be a 100% online shop so shipping is a concern for returns as well. Does anyone have experience with starting a niche woman's apparel online brand? [link] [comments]

indoor playground equipment companies Posted: 29 Jan 2018 07:21 PM PST My Wife and I are trying to start a children's indoor playground. We are are at the stage of finding and ordering playground equipment and have been struggling to find reliable information or reviews on suppliers. I was wondering if anyone who has any experience ordering through these sorts of companies could share there experiences? For example: What was the ordering process like? Where there any delays or problems with delivery? Did the equipment meet your expectations and did it last? Why did you initially chose to order through this company? [link] [comments]

One section of the presentation is asking some questions to a small business owner. The presentation will be shown and assessed by 3 other classmates. Thank you in advance! <3

Posted: 29 Jan 2018 06:57 PM PST I live in California (Ventura country) and want to file a DBA form. I was going to do it through legalzoom to avoid any paperwork that I'll probably not understand and during their setup, it asks for a business address and a PO Box is not acceptable. I am running my business out of my home, so would I put my home address as the business address? Or would I put my private mailbox address as the business address? Whenever I ship out orders, I am using my private mailbox as the return address. [link] [comments]
Own a small business an waited u til last minute to do taxes.. what should I expect? Posted: 29 Jan 2018 01:56 PM PST I own a small business that I started this past August. It's an LLC, and I am the only member. I have not filed any estimates quarterly taxes thus far as I was under the impression that I would just file everything on my personal tax return in April, but I'm beginning to believe now that I was being naive/ignorant by not doing anything about it for the past few months. I have 2 contractors who will need 1099s. My business has an average gross of around 20k monthly, of which approximately 6k or so is expenses. I am planning to go see a CPA tomorrow, but I'm feeling a bit nervous as I really have no idea what I'll be walking in to. I will also be receiving a 1099 myself for work I did for a different company last year before I started my own. My SO's mother is a CFO of a fairly large company, and she has me a bit worried that I may be on for trouble or at least a lot of fees etc by not doing anything with my taxes until now. Any help or insight is appreciated. [link] [comments]

Safe to allow an employee admin access to my Business Facebook Page? Posted: 29 Jan 2018 04:40 PM PST I'm reading that there are some security risks to this. Any precautions I should take on this? The way I understand the facebook page is that the business page is linked to my personal page so they need access to my personal page. Edit: I have next to nothing on my page in terms of valuable information. I don't use the facebook page and only really set it up to create the business page. (If this is a dumb question, I apologize, I don't really use social media. Just reddit lol) [link] [comments]
Do you accept FB friend requests from your clients? Posted: 29 Jan 2018 11:34 AM PST So I keep my personal FB page pretty personal (less than 300 people, mostly family, friends from college, that kind of thing). There's nothing on it that I'm particularly ashamed of, but my business is located in a pretty conservative area and I'm very active in progressive political issues, so I keep my privacy settings pretty locked down so only friends can see my content. My question is this, recently some of my potential and recent clients have been friend requesting me, and I'd really prefer for my clients to follow my business page and not friend me. Has anyone ever encountered push-back from politely informing clients that your FB page is private and not for business contacts? [link] [comments]
Have you used an SBA loan? I'm seeking 100k for debt consolidation. What are my options? Posted: 29 Jan 2018 03:09 PM PST Our profit margins are great and well above industry average, we have low overhead, and our sales growth is aggressive. However, last year, we invested a lot into a sales employee who didn't invoice our largest commercial contracts. That person was fired. However, we had to take out a huge 'pay-day' loan through a predatory lender for business. We've never missed a payment on our bills, except this lender. We're seeking to consolidate the debt. Would SBA work? How long is the process? I heard that less than 150k goes quick? Thoughts? I'm worried. I don't want to lose the business over this minor misstep. Everything else is going great. Looking for Small Business/Personal Budgeting Software Posted: 29 Jan 2018 10:40 AM PST My wife and I own a small, home-based business that is ~16 months old. My wife does the business side but asked me to look into software for her. We were looking at Wave since it is free and covers our needs - but they also had personal finance tools which she wants for household budgeting. However, they are removing this feature. Are there any other products out there that would include personal finance tools along with small business accounting and invoicing? Any advice is appreciated. Note - I did review previous posts, but none seemed to address the personal budgeting issue. [link] [comments]
Small Business- How do I pay my salesman when I'm near max capacity? Posted: 29 Jan 2018 09:00 AM PST As a fabrication company we can only build so many units per year. This year is starting off to be a big year. One of our salesman has received a very large order that has our CAD department and Fab shop almost completely tied up. This hinders the ability for our other salesman to get orders, and thus their pay suffers. We pay a base salary plus commision ( base salary is pretty low). what other pay structures are out there for companies like ours that still rewards big orders, but protects the other guys that are now handcuffed? Posted: 29 Jan 2018 03:26 PM PST My name is Casey and I work for Advanced Merchant Services based out of Jacksonville, Florida. We are nation-wide, and some of you have probably heard of us, or have had business with us as we've been around over 20 years and have agents all over the country. I wanted to impart a brief yet important understanding of the state of credit card processing as it is today before I reveal how we do what we do: In 2011 the rules of the Durbin amendment took effect, allowing merchants some relief on debit card fees, which were the most-used type of card at that time with estimates as high as 90% of purchases in the US. In short, banks/card-issuers lost $40 Billion on that deal. Banks/Card Issuers retaliated with lucrative incentives that "reward" consumers for using credit cards instead of debit cards. Some of you have seen and noted the rates on these rewards cards on your processing statements - some fees regularly exceeding 3.5%. It is estimated that some 80% of purchases in the US are now made with a rewards credit card. Many merchants' fees started to go up, many not realizing until they had already overpaid a fortune. It doesn't take much from knowing these facts to realize that merchants are currently solely funding the rewards card system that is currently in place. That bears repeating: You, the merchant alone, are paying for the lucrative rewards system set up by the card companies. You are literally paying for customers' skymiles/giftcards/other incentives that the card issuer "gives" them for using their card. Rewards cards are being used more than the common credit card to the tune of $110 Billion of rewards issued from 2010-2016. This is what makes us different from every other card processor out there: The Dodd Frank Act (section 1075) says "…A business can provide a 'cash discount' to consumers." What we do, and what we propose you do is view your prices and bottom line as it were determined by cash prices. You sell at a particular margin to make your desired profit, all assuming you get the full asking price of the item you are selling. Credit card processing by nature disrupts this due to excessive and rising fees. According to new Visa/ MC rules that went into effect Jan. 27, 2013 the processing game has changed! Essentially there is a fee now allowed to be charged. You give your customers a "Discount" for paying with cash and - according to Visa/MC rules - a "non-cash adjustment" for paying with a card up to 4%. We choose to charge 3.5%. There's a small but growing number of other ISOs that are implementing a version of this system who charge the full 4%. To be clear, your cash discount prices are the prices that you already advertise. Note: If your average ticket is under $16, in most states the non-cash adjustment is $0.50. Most often a flat rate of $89 covers the cost of the service, and is all you will see billed each month as the customers have paid the processing fees up front. This pricing style has been in effect for over a year now in our markets and is a raging success. I made this account for this post after having considered making and how to write this post for some time, and I just wanted to share it with reddit to see the general feedback. AMA! First time: potential supplier declined me Posted: 29 Jan 2018 10:16 AM PST Not really asking for help here, just sympathy. In my first two years of business I've had no trouble working with suppliers. Everyone's been kind and happy to work with me even with my tiny sales volume. Today for the first time a potential new supplier declined me because they want to work only with large retailers. They make a really high quality, awesome product that you can't find elsewhere, too. Such a bummer! [link] [comments]
xpost from r/tax. Commercial vs Residential Mortgage Posted: 29 Jan 2018 09:34 AM PST If I found a mixed-use building that I want to use for my business and can get either a Residential Mortgage or a Commercial Mortgage or Loan to buy the building. Is it better from a tax perspective to go the Residential route and then have my S-corp rent the building from myself? Or go the Commercial route completely and get a commercial loan or mortgage from my business? I know the loan terms will be different for residential vs commercial, but I'm trying to understand the tax benefits of one way vs the other too. [link] [comments]
Brainstorming business possibilities. Need help. Posted: 29 Jan 2018 11:53 AM PST Hello all entrepreneurs. Recently I've moved from the States to Canada. I'm working on getting citizenship through common law, although am attempting to pull a Work VISA out from somewhere. My background is in sales/marketing and finding a job that is fulfilling for me in my current predicament is challenging to say the least. In the meantime however, I plan to work for myself doing a small service for residents that can go unnoticed. Something like snow shovelling or window washing. However, this winter has been terrible and I don't think we've even seen a total of 5 inches of snow. And it's not quite the season for window washing just yet. So I'm in the process of brainstorming ideas of things I can get started in to at least get some money rolling. I'm perfectly fine financially to sit here for a year not working, but I'm the type of person who always has to be doing something and I hate not working, honestly. I'm very career focused and it's hard for me to be happy not working. If anyone has any ideas of small services I could play my hand at, I would be extremely grateful. [link] [comments]
