Picking My Business Name: Some Kid Electronics

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 08:44 PM PST

tldr: Need a name that doesn't sound like "a bit/a few/a bunch of" kid electronics, and instead sounds like "some random kid electronics".

I'm currently getting my blog for my DIY electronics/robotics guide business up and running. I am planning to post detailed guides on how to build robotics and electronics projects. Anyways, I thought a good name would be "some kid electronics" because I'm just some kid, but I was fairly disappointed when learning that people thought I meant "some" as in "a few/a bunch" and not "some random kid". Does anyone know of any ways a can get around this (changing name, a new name entirely, different context on site, etc)? I know "some random kid electronics" would work, but it's pretty long and I don't think it will work that well.

How do you deal with potential clients that don't want to pay your fee?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 09:06 AM PST

I have a small Senior companion business. I always wonder if I'm charging the correct price.

My rate is $30 per hour, which includes driving. Some seniors can get health care aides for $18 per hour, but many don't drive and don't speak English and are not honest. Many of the agencies also charge $40 per hour for companionship and driving. My parents think I should charge $50.

So, my rates are a bit in the middle. Without sounding arrogant, I'm probably as good as any Senior can get for companionship. I have a college degree, am native born American, have years of experience working with seniors, am endlessly patient, kind and caring.

Occasionally, potential clients will say they can get someone else for $18. I'd rather not work for $18 an hour, considering the cost of my gas and car plus the huge responsibility for caring for another person's life. In my area, $15 will be the minimum wage as of 2020.

Anyways, how do you guys deal with situations like these? I want to help everyone I can, but don't want to work for little.

    Check Issuing Service

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 08:01 PM PST

Does anyone use (or know of) a reputable check issuing service?

I've looked at a few but they are either out of business, have poor reviews, or have a hefty setup fee.

    Thank you!

Suggestion for very small business accounting software

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 01:47 PM PST

    Hi all,

I am a Realtor and my wife and I started a business to handle all our revenue and expenses. We started the business in 2016, and only had expenses (net loss) that year. In 2017, we had expenses and income, but will probably still come out to a net loss overall. That or it will be very close.

So far, all our expenses, receipts, etc, have been tracked crudely with spreadsheets and file folders on my PC, which makes taxes at the end of the year kind of a pain.

This year, I'm looking to upgrade our accounting situation and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations.

The company is an LLC, and we are the only two owners. We have no employees.

Quick Books is currently on sale on Amazon for $200. Is that a solid option?

I'd prefer to have a desktop client or similar with a one time fee. I do not want some kind of recurring monthly subscription or online situation. I want to keep all my records on my computer and only pay once.

    Thanks.

Looking to Hire Employees, Not Sure Where to Start

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 07:16 PM PST

Currently, own a camera repair business and we're looking to expand. Looking to hire a repair technician as well as an administrative/customer support personnel, however not sure where to start or what platform to use.

I've looked at a few such as SmartRecruiters, LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. but most of these options seem tailored to bigger companies. Since our total company is 6 people, I'm curious what has worked well for other people. Also, cost is a consideration so would appreciate hearing about that as well.

    Marketing

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 10:19 AM PST

So I'm not sure if im in the right subreddit to be asking this question but here it goes.

So I have a Pressure washing company I wanna redo my website (Which frankly I wouldn't even really call it a website) and SEO and have a google local listings. I talked to a web designer in my area and he was telling me i needed a actual physical "office" location that isn't a house or apartment (I run everything thru my phone) in order to have a local listing via google if not he said I might get blacklisted from google. I just wanna know if that's true.

I need help in getting custom gift cards for my new restaurant. Bonus, looking for POS system advice.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 07:02 PM PST

I opened a new restaurant this week and I am wanting to get gift cards to sell. I have a basic POS system, it's simply a cash register and we're probably going to use an iPad with a Square for credit card processing.

How do I go about getting custom gift cards? Is there a better POS that'd have gift card integration?

I'm looking for budget friendly and user-friendly.

I've found very little information online that looks at this topic, I am hoping that someone could shed some wisdom on a good POS as well as the gift card thing. I know that they are hand-in-hand, so any advice pertaining to one, the other or both would be greatly appreciated.

Should I hire marketing experts + how scalable is it?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 06:44 PM PST

I am at the moment selling on Ebay, Amazon and a few other platforms selling small leather goods in the UK. I am in the process of setting up my website. Turnover currently is $8000/month with just the marketplaces.

I had 2 thoughts, maybe it's naïve to think this way but I would like some thoughts/nuances.

    Thought 1:

To get traffic and sales on the website, I will need to do marketing. Now I am no marketing expert at all, I have some very basic knowledge of the different PPC's. However, I am not confident I can pull of the marketing by myself.

Sure, I can learn Google Adwords, Social media marketing, Media buy (banner advertising), Google Display Network, Google Shopping, Email marketing, Bing ads, etc. I realize that it will take me ages to learn all of it (after that period I am not even sure if I will be an 'expert' at it, most probably not).

So I was thinking hiring marketing experts for the following 2 reasons:

    1) They are the experts, they are in this industry and they work day in day out with paid advertising, they know what they are doing 2) I will lose a lot of money by trying, tweaking, optimizing, and eventually after 6 months I will realize I just can't do it because I am no expert

    Thought 2:

    Is it scalable?

Let's say I hire an expert in 1 field (Google Adwords for instance). As an example I start off with $500 and after a few months of testing, tweaking and optimizing, the expert gets me a good ROI and gets me $2500 every month after that (times 5 the monthly ad budget).

Now if I put back in the $2500, can it be scaled to $12500? Then take the $12500 and make more?

Yes, definitely there will be a ceiling I will hit, after that I won't be able to make more without giving up on the ROI. But is it really that quickly scalable or am I missing something here?

Let's say I do this for each one of the fields (social media, Google Shopping, etc.), can you exponentially grow (up to certain point ofcourse), meaning could you jumpstart your business this way?

    Questions:

    1) Is this the right approach? Should I hire marketing experts right from the start instead of trying to do it myself? (Thought 1)

    2) Is it scalable? Or am I just naïve? (Thought 2)

    3) Is it better to hire different freelancers/agencies for different fields? A different freelancer for Google Adwords, different freelancer for banner advertising, etc. or hire on all-in-one agency? (I would rather not depend on 1 person/agency but have different people for each one)

    4) How does a small business with not much investing money find experts? Do I just go to google and type in 'ad agency Google Adwords'? I am a bit afraid of getting ripped off by agencies + their fees must be huge I assume for a small business like mine.

Do they work with a fixed fee every month? Or is it also possible to find someone that does it for a small amount to start off with and then when it scales, asks for more (win-win situation for both)

    5) If I hire experts, besides asking for their portfolio, website and average ROI they are currently getting, what else should I ask for?

    Any advice/thoughts/nuances are appreciated!

How to use technology to better telephone and email?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 10:43 AM PST

Currently, i use a lot of telephones to call my customers for enquiries. I use the excel file where i have stored the company name and telephone number, and make call though the lan line telephone.

Secondly, i email on bulk to my customers weekly through my company domain. I use the standard outlook and bcc format.

Now, both seem outdated. What are some best practices for small business? I want to get better response, better time management, automation. Often with current methods, i eventually lose track, and forget who i have messaged/ called.

Commercial Lease is making me pay the HVAC for the other suite as well as mine. Normal?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 05:08 PM PST

I am in the middle of reviewing a lease for a building that has 2 suites. The lease is currently structured in that I pay HVAC for both suites and the other suite pays for electric for my unit and their unit. Is this normal? I feel like the HVAC bill will be way more and also introduce a bit of inconsistency in my monthly budgeting. Any help is appreciated.

IRS told me they don't deal with LLCs... wanted to update the officers, address, business code etc.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 12:55 PM PST

As the title states, I called the IRS this afternoon to ask them where/how to properly notify them of these changes and the gentleman I spoke with on the phone said these things have nothing to do with the IRS because they don;t "deal with LLCs", and I would have to notify at the state level (which I've done). This left me curious though, because I file a 1065 every year that has this information on it, so wouldn't they want to know about any changes? I've called before in the past and spoke to someone about changing my business code with no issue. Was this gentleman mistaken, or have things changed? My concern is any fees or penalties associated with making changes at the state level and not at the federal level.... Anyone have any experience with this? Thank you in advance.

Anyone made a Crypto Hedge Fund on the US?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 07:00 PM PST

I currently live in South America and i currently manage money there (cryptoassets) but regulations are harsh and it's really hard to start a stock fund ( not even talking about a crypto one) . I saw some people creating LLCs on Delaware (or Hedge Funds on NY) but I'm not sure if the same applys for crypto or if it can be used on another country. Do you have any experience on this subject?
