Feels like an auto insurance scam, thoughts?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 08:05 PM PST

This morning i was involved in a minor fender bender type of deal. We were both in an automatic car wash getting our vehicles washed. The vehicle in front of me looked to press his brakes and then subsequently reverse on to me and pull forward again. We traded information etc. Literally nothing happened to his vehicle because he had a large truck with a large hitch on it. To me though it did end up causing a pretty large hitchball sized dent on my front bumper. He denied he had anything to do with it, he blamed the car wash system. From what it sounds like he is trying to scam/putting the blame on me. Thankfully i do have dash cam video of what happened.

I know traditionally speaking the person in the rear is at fault. But we were both in an automated tunnel. I spoke to the manager at the car wash and he told me that the only way anyone could get into an accident inside is due to driver negligence. Stuff like braking/turning the wheel, driving on the tracks. He put the "fault" on the driver in front.

I have filed a claim with his insurance only because i have video of what actually happened.

Just want to hear r/insurance thoughts on the matter. I just had one question: As a matter of protecting myself should i send the video to their insurance or my own?

    Insurance fraud?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 05:31 PM PST

Hey guys. Long story short I got into a fender bender almost a year ago and it was finally settled a couple months ago. I happened to hit my "friend" (by random chance) who turned around and sued. Since we were friends I already knew he needed back surgery (was severely obese 90% of his life) but used this accident as the cause of it. Whatever. He even admitted his mother was just greedy over text and I gave it to my insurance and they reduced the settlement. Whatever.

Anyway, the car was an 08 lexus 350es or something like that. Base model lexus with like 100k on it. Worth maybe $8-9k tops. There was only scratches on it. Seriously, I'm good with cars and I could have bought a bumper and got it painted for approximately $500. It barely looked like it was even hit. But they somehow finessed to get $9k on the car which had maybe $1000-2000 in damage. The car never got totaled. He got well over the 75% it would cost to fix the car, hell he almost got 100% of the worth of the car and it was never totaled.

How do things like that work? Why wouldn't they total something like that? Shortly after they got the $$ for the car his mom bought the sister a new car too.

Can I get insurance when I have my learners permit?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 10:56 PM PST

21 year old here, with no DL, because of reasons. Anyways, I have the option to either buy a used car, or buy driving lessons. I can't do both because of money constraints.

So if I decide on buying a car, and i have it in my name, am I able to insure it? With me being 21 and having a permit, do I need to have someone else listed as a driver who has their DL? And if so what are the requirements of said person?

How much will my Car Insurance Rate go up after an at-fault incident?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 10:50 PM PST

I'm from 21, from California and have full coverage car insurance plan with my family. I was recently involve in a rear ended situation in which I was at fault. The incident happened on the freeway so the damage was pretty bad. I'm assuming the damage will exceed 4000$ in repairs for the other party's car. I just wanted to know how much will my rate go up from this incident? Will my family members be affected? How long will this affects my record? & What's the best way to lower the insurance costs.

It's my first incident that I've caused so I'm pretty shaken up and just worried about the finances. Thank you in advance.

Can I cancel health insurance through covered ca after I get employer sponsored health insurance?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 09:54 PM PST

I was unemployed for the past 6 months and enrolled into a health plan through covered CA (plan starts 2/1). Last week I got a job with health benefits, but benefits won't kick in for another two months. Can I cancel my health insurance once my employer's health benefits kick in? Or am I stuck with it until the end of the year?

Did my oral surgeon commit a fraud? Insurance NYC/CA

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 09:47 PM PST

In 2017, I was in NYC (In CA now). I had 2 jobs. A is a full time job. B is a part time job. Both offered dental insurance that I paid partially (A) and fully (b).

Last summer, I had one of my teeth removed. I found this oral surgeon through my main insurance's website. I told them I had 2 oral insurances, they said it's okay and would work it out.

They submitted a claim with insurance A, everything was approved and the total was $600 and my copay for this procedure was $200. Then they submitted a claim to insurance B, they were paid $360 by insurance B and according to insurance B, my copay for this procedure was $180.

All in all, the office more than enough money for my procedure. I asked the office if I needed to pay the copay, they said no since basically both insurances paid for the procedures and the copay basically canceled each other out.

I also used these 2 insurances for my regular cleaning. I had 4 cleaning since each insurance only allowed one cleaning every 6 months. So, my dentist billed A then B then A then B for 2017 cleaning.

In 2018, I was transferred to CA (my main job). Today I went to a dentist yesterday and I was told I needed a crown. I told them I had two insurances ( I still have my insurance B through Cobra). They said no problem but they wanted to know how they would bill these 2 insurances since both insurances are both acting as my primary dental insurance. So, I showed them the bills from my oral surgeon for my teeth removal. My dentist said this doesn't look right, he's not sure but he said my oral surgeon wasn't supposed to bill the two insurance companies for same procedure.

Is this true? The only reason I chose to sign up for my insurance B when offered by my part time job was so I could minimize the copay. My NY dentist also said it was no problem and the oral surgeon office/billing person also said this was not an issue at all. I believe, my NY dentist also charged both companies for my deep cleaning. If he only used my main insurance, I would have paid $150 for the copay.

I did some quick internet research, it says the secondary insurance may deny the claim but in my cases, they didn't.

Honestly I know nothing how insurances work. I did disclose to my dentist and oral surgeon that I had 2 insurances and they kinda took care of the rest of the paperworks. I didn't even think of anything until my CA dentist brought this up to me.

Did they commit a fraud or my CA dentist is wrong/confused? Did I commit a fraud?

    Thanks

Penalized for more than one home insurance claim in a short time period?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 03:10 PM PST

Bought the 100-year-old house 1 year ago, it was rehabbed (poorly, as we are discovering) about 8 years ago. Last month we had a sewage overflow in our basement, filed a claim through our insurer and were reimbursed about 7k. Now we are discovering roof leaks that will most likely be about 8k to fix (since it involves ripping off a roof deck to access the problem). Will we be penalized/rate-hiked/possibly insurance canceled for making multiple insurance claims (it's two roof leaks, will likely be two separate claims) in a short period of time? I don't know if I can name the insurer, but it starts with the "Statue of" and rhymes with "zutual" (yes i know that's not a word).

    Canadian-in-America Marketplace insurance options

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 09:41 AM PST

I was referred here by the Immigration board. Hi, to all experts!

I'm a Canadian here in the US on a TN work visa. My employment (which used to give me good coverage) abruptly ended. I've already lined up a job in the same field and plan to go back to Canada and cross back in when its finalized to update my TN status. (For context; got fired (entire department shut down), stayed in the country and lined up this new position within 2 weeks so I never moved back to Canada.) However, the new job does not give insurance. I've never had to really deal with the American insurance system before and am wondering if staying on my former employer's insurance (at the STEEP cobra rate) is the best way to go? Can we (Canadians here on TN-Visa) sign up through the Market place? If so, what's the best/most painless way to go about doing that?

Question Re: "He said She Said" Car Insurance Situation

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 03:09 PM PST

Hello r/Insurance. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Two Friday's ago I was driving down my parking garage and a person coming up the ramp hit my front end when they were turning left coming up the ramp around a corner. My bumper got fairly smashed up and his drivers side headlight was broken. I thought it was a pretty cut and dry case as I had come to a complete stop and he ran into me. I called his insurance company and filed a claim, but then a few days later my insurance company called me and told me HE was filing a claim against me!

So I gave a statement to my insurance company and after my original conversation with his insurance company they have gone silent! What's my move here? Just wait for my insurance company to hash it out and (hopefully) come to the conclusion that the other driver was clearly at fault?

Any advice is much appreciated. I have little to no experience with Car Insurance Claims.

Best way to explain uninsured motorist coverage?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 02:44 PM PST

I've just sold my two first auto policies (they were easy-going same coverage, just beating prices) and I'm nervous to sell more. Mainly because I'm not confident in the way that I explain uninsured motorist coverage.

I feel like I do a poor job with my explanation and confuse the customer more, then I get confused when they ask questions. Basically I talk myself into a corner.

What I say now is "If I hit you, you hit me, or you hit a tree, and you are un or under insured, uninsured motorist coverage pays your medical bills and pain and suffering."

    Thanks!

Cip c12 property course- need help!!!

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 02:29 PM PST

Hi everyone, sorry for the poor formatting as I'm writing this on my phone. I just completed my GIE in December and decided to leap into CIP without any work experience in the field, and i'm finding this course pretty challenging. More specifically how the hell do you memorize everything?! Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should focus on, or what the final will be like? My teacher's answer to everything so far has been "I dont know, I dont see the final exam" and its becoming hard to determine whats most important to memorize. Should I focus on the powerpoint slides which condenses everything to a few words, or should I try to memorize the long definitions and terms in the text? I'm scoring pretty low on the narrative chapter questions based on the answer key provided. Does anyone know if the examiners require you to answer in the same wording as the text or can you use your own wording? If you care to add to my rant, have any advice for a newbie to the CIP program, or experience taking this course please feel free to comment.

    Car Insurance Policy? Changes?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 04:18 PM PST

I am currently with State Farm(Kentucky, USA) and they are absolutely ravaging me financially. I have been with them for over 7 years. I am ~30. No accidents, no claims, no tickets, 720+ credit, good driver, etc.

I have 3- Star discount and renters insurance bundled along with everything else possible.

Here is the situation with State Farm:

    2005 Honda S2000 - Full Coverage $160

    Bodily Injury $25,000/50,000

    Property Damage $25,000

    No Fault $10,000

    $1,000 Deductible

    Emergency Road Service

    Uninsured Motor Vehicle Coverage $25,000/$50,000

    2007 Honda Element - Liability $97

    Bodily Injury $25,000/50,000

    Property Damage $25,000

    No Fault $10,000

    $1,000 Deductible

    Emergency Road Service

As you can see, it is extremely high and I have been asking them to explain why and they never can.

I got a quote from Kentucky Farm Bureau it is A LOT less so I am thinking of switching.

    Kentucky Farm Bureau Quote:

    2005 Honda S2000 - $68

    2007 Honda Element - $92

Bodily Injury Liability $100,000 each person/ $300,000 each accident

    Property damage $100,000 each accident

    Medical Payments - no coverage

Auto damage - collision = actual cash value/$500 deductible

Auto damage - other than collision= actual cash value/$500 deductible

    Transportation expenses $35 daily/ $1,050 total

    Personal Injury Protection

Limit of liability $10,000 each person/ no deductible

Work loss, replacement services loss, etc. $200 each person, per week

    Funeral expenses $1,000

    Uninsured Motor Vehicle Coverage $25,000/$50,000

As you can see, it's a HUGE difference. $257/month vs $160

    Am I missing something?

Question about who gets the check (auto).

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 10:47 AM PST

I was rear ended by a company truck three weeks ago. It was not my fault, obviously, and the driver's corporate auto insurance is accepting liability. No issues there.

The body shop has detected extensive damage and is thinking the car will be totaled. This is pending the insurance company's assessment.

I am financing the vehicle and am unclear on what happens with the check from the insurance company, in the instance of a total. I've been told that when you make a claim on your own insurance for a financed vehicle and that vehicle is totaled, your insurance company will only write a check out to the financing company so that the money you're given goes directly to paying off your loan.

I've seen, however, that if you are filing through someone else's insurance (when you're not at fault), if their insurance company decides your car is totaled, they make the check out to you and not the financing company.

Does anyone know the deal with this from experience?

Questions after house burned down. California

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 10:25 AM PST

My house burned down in October. It was a total loss and I have a couple few questionsat this point.

    • I have been paid out 75% of the dwelling coverage and it is in an escrow with the mortgage company. The mortgage company wont let me do anything until the final estimate of loss is provided by the insurance company. 4 months out and I don't have that yet. I reach out to our adjuster every week or two and have had no updates and he wont commit to a time line. Is this a reasonable amount of time to wait? The adjuster tells me it is taking longer than normal due to the amount of homes which were lost in the area (4000+ homes). But will not say how long is longer than normal.

    • My loss of use coverage has "Loss of use. Shortest reasonable time. Payment will be for the shortest time required to repair or replace the damage or if you permanently relocate, the shortest time required for your household to settle else ware." The insurance has already approved to pay for a rental for 12 months. After the 12 months if I still need the a place to live they would approve another 12 month lease. I moved into the apartment in Nov 2017 and the lease ends Nov 2018. The lease is in my name but the insurance is sending the rent check directly to the landlord every month. If I decide not to rebuild my house does the shortest reasonable time include the time I have to spend looking for a new house to buy and all that entails? If I do buy a new house before the lease is up will the Insurance company deal with breaking the lease? At least in CA there is no costs to break the least, but the tenant has to continue to pay the rent until a new tenant is found.

    Auto Insurance Claims Process Advice

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 01:04 PM PST

Lurked here for the past week trying to figure out what my best course of action would be.

I got into a traffic accident back in the end of October, so it has been 100 days or so since I started the claims process with All State. The actual accident didn't seem to be so I went home after exchanging details with the other driver. After a day or two, my cervical and thoracic spine region started to hurt. Went to the doctors and got a script to start physical therapy. Went in for an X-Ray and MRI as well. I honestly thought this would have been resolved by the end of 2017...

Fast-forward to now and I've got a new giant monthly expense called student loans... I haven't really budgeted for any additional PT/medical expenses for the new year and money was already tight prior to the accident and physical therapy. I'm worried that I'll be accumulating debt at a rate faster than I can pay back and I'll have interest stacking up while I wait for my claims process to be resolved. I reached out to my claims adjuster and asked to see if they could set up a side fund for specific costs associated with my treatment and I was denied, as they cited that they'd only review the claim after everything was resolved...

So I'm stuck on what I should do. Should I put everything on my credit card and bring up my debt when I'm resolving the claims issue? Will they even consider the interest or damage to my credit score? What are some other steps or advice you could give me? How can I emphasize that this has really impacted my day-to-day life?

My car was stolen and recovered but the jewelry inside wasn't (My jewelry insurance wont pay.) (x-post /r/legaladvice)

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 06:16 AM PST

This is probably my fault, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do or just move on.

I had a ring insured through Jewelr's Mutual. My car was stolen and recovered, but the insured ring (and another non-insured ring) was not, however there were 2 rings recovered as stated in the police report. I picked them up, but they were not MY rings. They were cheap plastic rings (most likely left by whoever stole the vehicle), so I tossed them. I never went back to the police department and told them they weren't my rings. I didn't think anything of it, I saw junk, I trashed it. That was clearly my mistake.

But now the jewelry insurance is saying that the police department stated 2 rings were recovered and since I didn't tell them the recovered rings weren't mine, they have no proof that they weren't my actual rings. The police department had no pictures or description of the rings other than "2 women's rings."

Is there anything I can do?

Am I required to speak with third party adjustor

    Posted: 29 Jan 2018 12:44 AM PST

[California]Hey guys using a throwaway for a reason. First time posting here so not sure where I should post it. Please excuse my formatting too since mobile. Last week, I got into an accident with a person that had suddenly switched from my lane. I was at the center divider inching forward so I can go to the right lane when someone suddenly someone merged into the divider. I tried to swerve to avoid them but was not able to. I filed a claim with my insurance and had given them my statement and they said that they would talk to the other person's insurance. However on Saturday, I received a letter from the mail stating that a claims adjustor from the other insurance has been trying to contact me for the past couple of days even though I have not received any calls or texts. From what my insurance is telling me that if I want my deductible back, the other insurance would have to accept liability. Question is, should I talk to the third party insurance even though I have already made a statement and claim to mine?
