Do you refer to yourself as "I" or "we" online?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 08:46 AM PST

My website and most of my social media refer to my self-owned business as "we." For example, "we offer this," "we take great pride in this," etc. The other day I posted an introduction about myself, "the face behind the business." I don't have any employees or anyone else that I work with, so I am wondering if I should start saying "I do whatever" instead of we.

What do other people do? Do you think it makes your business look more or less appealing?

Finally decided to venture entrepreneurially,Fiance and I started our own online Store**crickets**

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 11:46 PM PST

SOOO, we love the outdoors. Camping, Fishing, Hiking, Survival, the works. We decided that since we love it so much, we may as well work in it as well. So, after much discussion, research, debating, and deliberating, we finally built our online shop. After 3 weeks of being open, and no matter what to our best efforts, we have no sales. We have offered astounding discounts, and shared, shared, shared, and shared some more, then shared again, aaaaaannndddd....nada. Any suggestions? Our store platform guru's suggested Reddit. We're praying for some action, and are still exploring every option for advertising and marketing, but our funds are limited, so ad campaigns only go so far. I am a veteran of the US. Navy, so I have a fondness of vets. Anyone know of any grants for smallbusiness ecommerce? Thanks in advance! Also, check out our store and see if you have any feedback as for the setup. Any pointers would be well appreciated!! https://duke-peach.myshopify.com

I need ideas to get 50 more tax clients.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 07:47 PM PST

I own a relatively new CPA practice that specializes in expats and international tax & accounting. It's going great, but I still have capacity for about 50 more clients by April.

Does anyone have a professional service-based business that can offer ideas? I see a lot of posts about mass marketing for products and for freelancers who only need a handful clients, but I need ideas for when you need something in between.

Ideally the cost per client acquisition would be no more than $25, but we could probably work with as high as $50.

I'm aware of the marketing basics, but am looking for something a bit more unique.

    (Xposted) bankruptcy?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 08:25 AM PST

Hello all. I will try to be concise with this. I have tried to do some "google research" and browsed reddit some.

My husband and I are 50/50 partners in an LLC/partnership. No other owners/ investors. We've essentially run out of money. We have an SBA loan with a current balance of just under $130,000. We owe over $40,000 to the state in back taxes. And $19,000 to the IRS in back taxes, though the IRS has not begun to pursue us yet. We have almost zero in operating capital and were unable to pay this. I enlisted the help of my CPA to apply for an installment agreement. We were approved, but not at terms we can financially meet (over $3000/month). We applied for additional capital from the SBA to pay this tax debt but were denied. We have no other choice but to close it down, as the state is threatening to levy our bank account, seize essential business equipment, etc. and we would not be able to operate.

I fully understand that tax debt is owed forever and does not go away with bankruptcy. I assume that when we do finally close the doors, any and all assets will be sold to satisfy the tax debts first. We pay rent to a landlord for the business location so there's no real estate there to seize. I don't know that all the property the business owns is worth enough to completely satisfy the taxes. I assume then this means they will come after our personal property and any future wages we earn from new jobs, as well as any tax refunds.

When we pledged our SBA loan, we of course signed a personal guarantee. We somehow were approved despite having little collateral. We rent our personal home, so no mortgage or home to seize. We own 1 car worth about $3500, which we did use as collateral for the SBA. We also pledged our life insurance policy. That's the only 2 things we pledged personally for the loan and still the only 2 assets we have. Very little in the bank, no 401k or anything like that.

We also have a business credit card with a balance of about $12,000. I have private student loans which I know do not discharge in bankruptcy. I also have an old personal credit card with a balance of about $12,000 and a current personal card with a balance of $2500.

Questions - is bankruptcy the right tool here? Am I correct in assuming the SBA loan will in fact be discharged if we file chapter 7? Would both our business and us personally have to file for bankruptcy? I think it is a "plus " in this case that we really have little assets to seize here. Please, any advise here would be great. I have met briefly with our business attorney, but he does not do bankruptcy.

[Advice] Learn how to target the proper way for Facebook ads to help your business GROW.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 08:43 PM PST

As easy as Facebook ads might seem to bring you more customers it can be frustrating running ads getting traffic for your website but no sales (Cold Traffic) Today I want to talk about an aspect that will help your business which is Targeting.

We tend to think that we can't generate traffic or leads for our businesses when we try a couple of ads and never works. That's very far from the truth. The main problem is that we get caught up on how we want our ads to look like and the message, but the main problem remains is targeting. If you have a good product and a bad message but you know how to put it in front of the right people you will always get more sales and customers than someone who has a great message but in front of the wrong people.

This principle applies to small businesses not just Ecommerce and the dropshipping module. Targeting is always the key to success and what separates 7 figure empires from people who just chase money not building the brand for themselves and creating a loyal audience.

The solution is simple when you run ads make sure to put yourself in your customer's shoes first. For example when you are choosing the target audience make sure to think about where your customer is going to be clicking and place your ad there instead of just putting keywords in the interests section hoping someone would like it. Once you master the principle of finding your customer where they are instead of them searching for you you already won the game! That trick made us as 8 marketers take a diner from zero followers to 11k in the matter of months and also 2x their monthly revenue.

My goal is to help 365 businesses in 2018 the main question remains what's your goal for your business ? Do you wish for it to scale up? Or remain the same?

Lost on company formation (onshore UK vs offshore), online payment processing and merchant accounts!

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 07:06 PM PST

I'm planning to build an online platform. The main revenue will be through service providers, I take a cut of the transactions.. Uber, for example.

I'm a UK resident but currently in Thailand. The plan was to use Stripe Connect for managing payments - however, I need to register a UK business.

I was hoping to take advantage of my location independence, and go about setting up an offshore business and bank. One of the places that stood out was British Virgin Islands. Sadly, Stripe does not allow business registration from there.

But.. if I can find a payment processor and merchant account solution that does allow BVI businesses, or some other offshore business entity, then I'd be happy to follow my nose and see where that leads.

Any suggestions? Should I just register a UK business and lose the tax and red tape advantages of an offshore business? Is this something I could reform later if the business takes off (no advantage without revenue)?

    Would appreciate any insight.

Starting an LLC and protecting my personal assets

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 09:16 AM PST

I am looking to start an LLC in the state of Ohio and was wondering how I can ensure my personal assets are protected. I had talked with a friend who had told me that if you are the sole owner of your business, you can still be at risk of losing your personal assets if you were ever to get sued. He had said if your business had more than one owner, they could only come after business assets and not personal assets. I was thinking I could set it up so my wife or son owns part of the company with me as a way to make sure I am protected. Am I on the right track here?

I am consulting with an attorney next week but would like to know ahead of time so I'm educated on the matter.

I was hoping to just register the LLC this weekend because I have customer that is going to be potentially signing a contract Mon or Tues. So I was also wondering if once I registered the LLC, I could make changes after the fact(not renaming). Things like adding myself as the statutory Agent until I have found a lawyer that I am comfortable working with.

Software / Service for managing work crews?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 06:43 PM PST

Anybody have a service or software they recommend for managing work crews?

Perhaps a lawn crew, cleaning crew, install crew - track where they are, time spent, manage before and after photos, inventory, etc.

I see there's a Service Platform and a few others, but none of them seem to be very upfront with their pricing.

    Any good ones out there?

Looking for Professional (E&O) Liability Insurance for a FinTech startup.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 05:11 PM PST

Hi everyone, I've established a small business which revolves around purchasing/selling securities based on user-defined criteria. Though my business has been open to a relatively small handful of customers, I want to expand but would first like to purchase insurance in case something goes wrong (I'm doing everything I can think of to prevent something from going wrong, but I'd like to protect myself with liability insurance).

The problem I'm running into is finding an insurer who covers fintech businesses. As soon as I describe my business to them, they all tell me that "we don't cover that sort of business". So, do any of you know of any insurers that cover fintech companies? Thanks in advance!

Question about S Corp and LLC

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 12:07 PM PST

So I am 26 and employed full time at a consulting firm as a software engineer but have recently been approached by a few different companies through networking for some passive maintenance work and consistent on-call type work outside of my normal work hours. They are asking me how I want to structure the pay if I want to be a 1099 or employed part-time by them.

I have always dreamed about starting my own consulting firm some day and am now thinking that I might want to use this opportunity to start small and gain credibility (by being able to say my company has been employed and trusted by X and Y companies) by forming an LLC and having them employ the LLC and pay myself through it. I have heard of a lot of contractors in my industry doing this through an "S" corp as well.

My question is what are the benefits or downfalls of approaching it this way? And what would be the difference between being an S corp or an LLC? I've also heard that incorporating has tax benefits due to being able to write off a lot of business expenses on my taxes (laptops, equipment, driving expenses). Is this true? Thanks in advance.

[Giveaway] I want to help 365 businesses GROW in 2018 by leveraging the power of social media.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 02:55 PM PST

We all buy stuff from the internet so why not put your brand out there to leverage the power of social media to get more customers? You see the difference between online ads and offline ads are the following: TV, Radio, Direct mail campaigns, billboards all those stuff aren't as effective because it isn't targeted. Simple example have you ever seen an ad on TV or Radio and said oh great another ad and switched the channel ? Chances are that happened of course. What about the Internet? Have you ever seen an ad that made you excited and made you watched till the end ? Chances are this has happened and still happening till the moment. We are willing to give you a free audit for your business. To elaborate more about how I'm going to help your business and what exactly is a social media audit.

Social media audit is basically an evaluation of your business's current situation and where it stands in your local market place. Also identifying the strongest and the weakest aspects in order to attract new clients.

For example if you are advertising on social media you have a much better chance to attract new clients than the ones that don't.

Why should I advertise online? The main reason is you can track every single penny you spend online. You don't even have to have a business card just a video that says your brand story and a link to capture leads for your business. P.S if you are running ads people are more likely to click on it if you are A) Giving a discount. or B)Offering buy X get Y free.

A lot of people try marketing online but the problem is they just don't know how to run ads the right way and that ends up in the person quitting on online ads, seeing it as it doesn't work and also leaving money on the table.

I have helped over 200 businesses last year this year my goal is to double that or at least help 365 businesses. The question remains are you willing to scale your business and branch out or do you want your business to stay the same ?

I would love to give you this free audit we are a group of 8 marketers we will evaluate every single aspect of your business and give you a free 30 minute consultation call. This is valid for the first 10 business owners that message us only.

    Profit sharing agreement?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 01:13 PM PST

I am moving away from my town and setting up my business to be run by some trusted employees, who are in return getting a percentage of profit. We are going to tie them into a contract that lasts the length of our lease (plus an option). Should I be doing this through a lawyer? Is that even legal whatsoever, a "you gotta stay this long" type deal? I guess that's the entire point of a contract. Clearly, no experience with this type of set up.

Note: I don't want opinions like "this is a bad/great idea". Just need advice on how to actually set up the contract. Thanks for any help you might be able to give!

Question for retailers who have used popup shops or leased small shop space

    Posted: 27 Jan 2018 07:27 AM PST

My retail shop is online only for now, but I have a dream of adding a small "brick and mortar" shop to use as sort of a showroom or place where local customers can shop and see product demonstrations. I can't afford to lease space yet, so I've been reading about popup spaces and other innovative solutions like sharing space.

I was just reading about a company that repurposes shipping containers into small popup shops. Kind of cool. But that sounded even more expensive than just renting a little brick and mortar shop.

When I look at the client list of the popup shop/innovative shop companies (Poppir, etc), I see only major companies like Nike. Of course they an afford ANYTHING! Which makes me doubt that these are good options for little guys like me, even though a small space looks like it would be ideal. Has anyone here tried something like this, or just looked into it? Was it cost effective, or more expensive than a traditional shop lease?
