a few Q on how hedge funds treat performance fees Posted: 29 Dec 2017 09:04 PM PST I have a few questions on how hedge fund accounting of their fees. let's assume a hedge fund has a typical 2/20 with high water mark the mgmt fee of 2% would be easy enough, you take 1/12th and each month deduct it from net assets Q1 how is the performance fee paid? or rather when? is it taken from net assets and paid to the manager at the end of the year when the books are closed? if so, what about clients that may withdraw funds before year end? are they asked to pay retroactively? or is the fund closed for withdrawals until year end to not allow this circumvention? lockups are fairly common but usually they require a minimum of time to pass and then advance notice, say 1 or 2 quarters, so afaik that doesn't clear up the issue of performance fee "circumvention". so what am I missing? Q2 also, for funds which the managers have invested their own money, do they receive the same 2/20 fees? it would seem to be a case of "double dipping" if they do, would it not? would appreciate it if responses included real world examples thank you! More communities about value investing? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 08:56 PM PST I'm self taught and would like to gain more expe and knowledge and spend more time around people in the value camp. Any recommendations of online communities focused on the religion of value investing? Also, other than a Columbia MBA, what are other well respected places to study value investing?
